Our Color

By Daniella Djiogan

I am a woman of color

I was born to parents of color

I didn’t choose to be of color

But I don’t regret being born of color

All I regret are the criticisms that come along with being of color

The looks, the preconception, and the ignorance that surrounds my color

 I am human

I am made of flesh and blood like you,

Why do you look at me with strange eyes?

Color doesn’t define who we are,

But circumstances and our environment do shape our lives.

So, know me before you judge me.

I am a woman of color

No, I am who I am

I am an individual with an identity

I am who I was born to be.
