Understanding Poverty 101

By Daniella Djiogan

POVERTY means you are like the birds, not knowing when you will get your next meal

Poverty means you don’t even have clothes to wear on your body

Poverty means you are sleeping on the streets on a snowing day without shelter

Poverty means your only security is your health…or not

Poverty means you are stuck somewhere with no means of escape

Poverty means you can’t feed your family

Poverty means you are forced to sell your body

Poverty means you live in a shattered house

Poverty means you live in a one bedroom apartment with six others

Poverty means your stomach hungers & thirst

Poverty means having to marry off your child to some old rich man

Poverty means you live in a village without electricity or water

Poverty means living in a war zone with no chance of escape

Poverty means you can’t even smile because that requires energy

Poverty means being malnourished

Poverty means you’re dying of an incurable disease

Poverty doesn’t necessarily mean Africa.
